Northern English Springer Spaniel Society

Open Show 2008

Mrs Jane Eyeington

It was an honour and a great pleasure to be invited to judge the Northern ESS Society Open show, I must congratulate the officers and committee for a super show held at a lovely venue. We were blessed with blue sky all day, which allowed all the judging to be done outside.

My thanks must also go to the exhibitors, I was delighted to have well presented dogs to go over, they are all a credit to you. To my stewards that kept me in order all day – thank you.

Minor Puppy Dog (2,2)

Puppy Dog (4,2)
1 Richardson/Terry – Cherishym Bright Knight
Happy and outgoing, 11 month old L&W dog, up to size, masculine head shape but would have liked a more almond shaped eye to give a softer expression, has time on his side for eyes to darken, good length of neck, chest deep and well developed for age, handler having a tendency to overstretch him and therefore loose his topline, movement unsteady at the moment
2 Woolhouse – Cherishym Outlaw
Litter brother to 1, a squarer and more compact outline, with the same type of head, lacked the neck and shoulders of his brother, nice bone, moving much more steadily and holding a firm topline

Junior Dog (4,1)
1 Mr & Mrs Warrener – Cepen Changing Places With Waterswarren
Youngster who was immaculately presented, showing a tidy picture when stacked, good depth to the head, but would have liked a little more definition and chiselling, neck of good length which showed the correct slight arch, well placed shoulders, slightly longer cast in the body, time is on his side to gain the depth and spring, good bone, straight front onto tight feet, well angulated rear, when settled moved well and with drive.
2 Mr & Mrs Lillie – Tryhard Tempest At Freeway
Another nice youngster, excellent bone but today looking a little raw in body, having lovely rear quarters, with good width of thigh and bend of stifle which he used well to drive round the ring.
3 Long & Leeming – Tryhard The Black Gladiator

Yearling Dog (4,3)
1 Mr & Mrs Warrener – Cepen Changing Places With Waterswarren

Maiden Dog (1,0)
1 Woolhouse – Cherishym Outlaw

Novice Dog (2,1)
1 Richardson/Terry – Cherishym Bright Knight

Graduate Dog (4,1)
1 Mrs Bashforth – Alanea Warrior of Jorobaden
Fell for this liver tri’s head, he has such a lovely soft expression, equal proportions, strong deep and square well chiselled, with the correct eye shape, firm topline, good forechest and spring of rib, moderate rear angulation, well boned, moving at one with the handler - RBD
2 Mr & Mrs Warrener – Cepen Changing Places With Waterswarren
3 Mr & Mrs Warrener – Beresford Ebay at Waterswarren

Post Graduate Dog (5, 1)
1 Long & Leeming – Tryhard Brandshatch
A balanced elegant dog, with a more refined head, the dark eye and fluting giving the typical gentle springer expression, good depth to the body, straight front and tight elbows, would have liked tighter feet, moved with verve
2 Mr & Mrs Warrener – Cepen Changing Places With Waterswarren
3 Mr & Mrs Elliot – Jonabar Mulled Wine

Limit Dog – (6,3)
1 Mr & Mrs Pidcock – Ketsby King of Klubs
1 & 2 could easily have changed places, 1 being more settled today. Winner a mature dark liver dog who is not exaggerated in any way, an honest dog who did all that was asked of him. Masculine yet refined head with a dark enough eye, flowing neck, firm topline, nicely angulated rear, in full coat but not quite the condition of 2, a steady and true mover.
2 Mr & Mrs Guy – Calvdale John O Connor
A lovely dog, who once settled would push hard, up to size dog of good proportions, well boned with good depth throughout shown in gleaming condition.
3 Mrs Gregory – Arcadia Atomic

Open Dog (1,0)
1 Mr & Mrs Lillie – Freeway Stormy Waters
A dog that is now in full bloom, and who looked a picture stood. Having the attributes of a symmetrical compact and strong dog as the standard asks, he has a balanced head shape but would have liked a little more work to it, strong and muscular neck, firm and deep body, excellent bone, liked his width of thigh and sweep of stifle, put down in immaculate condition, sound and positive on the move, delighted to award him with BD & RBIS

Minor Puppy Bitch (1,0)
1 Mrs L Gregory – Arcadia Act of Devience
A very lively and exuberant puppy, which made it rather difficult to see her attributes, she is of a nice size with a pleasing head, medium bone, nicely angulated rear, I saw glimpses of her movement which showed her to be true.

Puppy Bitch (4,2)
1 Richardson/Terry – Cherishym Bright Star
A mature puppy of a smaller frame, giving an elegant look when stacked, adequate bone for her size, pleasing head plains, lovely depth throughout, holding a firm topline both standing and on the move with a well placed tail which was well carried. Well presented and in good coat - BPIS
2 Wileman/McLean-Wileman – Mompesson Spic N Spam
A striking bitch, just needing more time to drop into herself and mature, she has more substance and bone to her than the winner, being well handled and moved smoothly

Junior Bitch (2,1)
1 Mrs Clarke – Tryhard Go For Broke With Tigerrock
A B/W bitch, appealing head with good eye colour, clean neck, short coupled well set full tail, moderate rear angulation, moved with drive but a little wide in front.

Yearling Bitch (5,1)
1 Mr & Mrs Willey – Arcadia Almeria
A pleasing dark liver bitch, who was of a nice overall size with good bone, balanced body proportions, her head was a little stronger and could benefit from a shade more foreface, liked her body depth and firm topline which she kept on the move, good width of thigh, and well let down hocks, well presented with gleaming jacket and well feathered to complete the picture
2 Mr & Mrs Geddes – Gleadsbury Whatadaydream at Debanza
A different type to winner and more flashy bitch, liked her head which was well proportioned, showing good chiselling and fluting, well placed ears, giving the kind expression, moderate neck, a tad long in the body, enough rear angulation.
3 Mrs Clarke – Tryhard Go For Broke With Tigerrock

Maiden Bitch (1,0)
1 Richardson/Terry – Cherishym Bright Star

Novice Bitch (2,0)
1 Mrs Clarke – Tryhard Go For Broke With Tigerrock
2 Richardson/Terry – Cherishym Bright Star

Graduate Bitch (4,2)
Splitting hairs with these 2 bitches, both having their virtues
1 Mr & Mrs Geddes – Gleadsbury Whatadaydream at Debanza
2 Ms Rostron – Ziphill Carmen
LWT bitch who was shorter coupled than the winner of the class, the tri markings further enhanced her feminine head, give the soft expression, being a little taller she had more daylight beneath her, moved steady enough when not giving her handler a hard time

Post Graduate Bitch (6,2)
1 Mr & Mrs Gibson – Calvdale Come Catch Me
What a neat package this bitch was, most feminine of heads with a lovely soft expression, excellent depth and forechest, straight front onto tight feet, short coupled, would have liked a little more rear angulation, well presented and moved with purpose and drive
2 Mr & Mrs Elliot – Jonabar Song of Springtime
A smaller framed bitch than 1, but similar in outline, appealing head, excellent depth, firm topline and correct tail set, shown in lovely coat, nice sweep of stifle, but was out moved by winner
3 Mr & Mrs Guest – Robil Greta Garbo

Limit Bitch (5,2)
1 Mr Smith – Melverly Sublimity
When this bitch walked into the ring, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on her, thought she was stunning, when stacked she has a beautiful outline, very graceful and elegant yet workman like, super head with good length and depth to foreface clean cut back skull and well chiselled, eyes still to darken a tad, neck flowing into well placed shoulders, lovely bone, well developed middle piece, well bent stifle and immaculately presented, today she sparkled on the move covering the ground with easy strides and moving true. It was my pleasure to award her BB & BIS
2 Mr & Mrs Willey – Calvdale Ask Me No Questions JW
A lovely bitch of a different stamp to winner, being more compact, with many fine qualities, super head with the correct refinement to give the soft springer expression, correct front assembly, straight front onto tight feet, excellent depth, firm topline , good width of thigh and well let down hocks. She moved with real drive and purpose
3 Mrs Clarke – Cleavehill Rose Petal With Tigerrock

Open Bitch (6,3)
1 Long & Leeming – Tryhard Ring O Kerry
Honest sort of bitch, with nothing overdone, when stacked showed a balanced outline, well proportioned head with kind expression, clean neck with the slight arch, adequate bone for her size, moderate bend of stifle, moved ok but not showing herself off to advantage.
2 Mrs Clarke – Cleavehill Rose Petal With Tigerrock
Nice to see a BWT, a compact bitch with a pleasing head, moderate length of neck, good bone and lovely depth, would have liked a little more rear angulation, shown with nice furnishings.
3 Richardson/Terry – Baldragon Beyonce To Cherishym

Special Beginners Dog or Bitch (6,3)
1 Mr & Mrs Warrener – Cepen Changing Places With Waterswarren
2 Mrs Clarke – Tryhard Go For Broke With Tigerrock
3 Mr & Mrs Warrener – Beresford Ebay at Waterswarren

Veteran Dog or Bitch (3,1)
2 very different, but equally good dogs
1 Mr & Mrs Elliot – Jonabar Annies Song
7 year old L&W, this bitch presented a very neat package, when stood looked totally balanced, not a big girl but everything in the right place, ultra feminine head being ultra picky would have liked a little more fluting, strong neck of good length, excellent depth, good bone, firm topline, liked her width of thigh sweeping stifle and well let down hocks, she could drive around the ring, certainly showing the youngsters how to move, showed her socks off in the challenge to be awarded RBB & BVIS
2 Mr & Mrs Geddes – Debanza Brigadier
L&W 10 year old, a lovely sound dog, perhaps a little too much of him for me, but you cannot fail to see his attributes, such a super correct head type with a melting expression, adequate neck, level topline, oodles of bone, chest well let down and moderate rear angulation, very animated on the move again showing those half his age how it is done

Presidents open Stakes Dog or Bitch
1 Mrs Clarke – Cleavehill Rose Petal With Tigerrock
2 Mr & Mrs Elliot – Jonabar Song of Springtime
